They are large, beautiful creatures that move with a lumbering grace. I have watched large moose sit virtually undetected surrounded by 30 people who were none the wiser. And while I know they can be aggressive, I've never seen anything but a gentle spirit from these animals on the many occasions I have been near them. And lucky for me, there are quite a few where I live. This is a great shot I got of two turkeys making a heart shape with their bodies. I think most people enjoy picturesof Bald Eagles or Bears because they epitomize strength in our culture, but honestly I identify more with these birds. But I'm a strange turkey (pun intended). As we walk around we cloak ourselves in many lies, everything from how good we look, how smart we are, to how tough we are. Moments like these strip all that away in an instant and you stand in naked reality. Any moment this grizzly can run across the field at 30 mph and eat me before I'll even recognize I'm in danger. Thankfully bears are not that interested in us and I'm in more danger from being hit by random space debris. But never the less, that cold reality is like diving into a frozen lake, you remember it. Most of the elk gather here in the winter to keep out of the colder areas of the park and gain access to food not completely covered in snow. This was after a 6 hour cliff repelling trip. There is nothing quite like sitting on a rock the size of a small bed with 4 people on the side of a cliff, not hooked into ropes. I’ve had Grizzlies run by me that didn’t scare me as much as that trip. But it was an experience I’ll remember. Just for those of you who don’t know, Northern Ireland is completely distinct from the Republic. There is a sense of violence that undercuts everything up there and is so different from the friendly and openness you feel in the rest of Ireland. Me and Ryan ended up walking into a bar in Belfast where all the patrons stopped and went silent until we spoke. I think if my accent had come out wrong, we might have gotten buried somewhere. Later we were told this was an old IRA bar and they couldn’t believe we walked in. Most of the elk gather here in the winter to keep out of the colder areas of the park and gain access to food not completely covered in snow.
